Niko Avalanche Program

Avalanche awareness and education specifically designed for youth.

Course begins Thursday, February 18th. Only a handful of still spots available

Gateway Mountain Center is excited to be among a select group of organizations partnering with AIARE, the Northwest Avalanche Center, and the fund in piloting a first of its kind youth avalanche education course!

Current avalanche programming has been developed for adults and therefore does not address known differences in the ways young people learn and retain information. The NIKO program teaches open communication within a team and builds confidence in both leadership skills and risk management techniques. Spanning five weeks, both in class and in the field, the NIKO program provides adolescents with the tools they need to recreate more safely in the wintertime mountains. Students learn skills and techniques for winter backcountry travel to support their decision-making process and apply these tools in the field.

The course is scheduled to begin February 18th with virtual classroom sessions every Thursday evening over 5 weeks. Participants will take part in a field day on Donner Summit on Saturday, March 13th.

We only have a handful of spots available. Signup today!
